Mood is a temporary state of mind or feeling. It can be individual, when we are in the mood for a certain type of food or a particular type of a movie. It can also be collective, when there’s a pervasive mood in culture or subcultures - nostalgic or optimistic or exuberant. Often overlooked in marketing, mood is actually the key decision-making factor when we are choosing where to go, what to buy or how to spend our time. Mood is closely linked to taste, and for this year’s Sociology of Business Shopping Guide, I used mood as the organizing principle.
